Glossary of Internet Terms and Phrases
XForms
- Traditional
HTML Web forms don't separate the purpose from the presentation of a
form. XForms, in contrast, are comprised of separate sections that describe
what the form does, and how the form looks. This allows for flexible
presentation options, including classic
XHTML forms, to be attached to an
XML
form definition.

XHTML (Extensible HyperText Markup Language)

HTML and can be defined as an
XML
application. It is almost identical to HTML 4.01 and is aimed to replace

XML (Extensible Markup Language))
- A simple, very flexible text format derived from
SGML. Originally designed to meet the challenges of large-scale
electronic publishing, XML is also playing an increasingly important role in
the exchange of a wide variety of data on the
World Wide Web and elsewhere.

XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language Family)
- XSL is a language for expressing
style sheets. An XSL style sheet is, like with
CSS,
a file that describes how to display an
XML
document of a given type. XSL shares the functionality and is compatible
with CSS2 (although it uses a different syntax). It also adds:
1) A transformation language for XML documents: XSLT. Originally intended to
perform complex styling operations, like the generation of tables of
contents and indexes, it is now used as a general purpose XML processing
language. XSLT is thus widely used for purposes other than XSL, like
generating
HTML
web pages from XML
data.
2) Advanced styling features, expressed by an XML document type which
defines a set of elements called Formatting Objects, and attributes (in part
borrowed from CSS2 properties and adding more complex ones.
